What is Prana?

Prana is a fundamental aspect of the yogic system and translates best as ‘life force,’ and is also referred to as Chi in other Eastern traditions. According to Yoga it is the underlying energy of all manifestation in the universe.

The prana circulates in the human body via Nadis, subtle energy channels (conduits, nerves, veins), much the same as meridians in Chinese acupuncture. Hatha Yoga Pradipika mentions 72,000 nadis in the subtle body and other Indian texts mention up to 200,000 (Shiva Samhita).

The yoga poses (Asanas) are designed to purify the nadis and thus increase the flow of prana so the body is in full health. The navel is a major plexus for prana.
